School Resource Officer
The Palmyra Police Department in agreement with the Palmyra Board of Education has established a memorandum of understanding to place a School Resource Officer (SRO) into Palmyra Public Schools beginning in the school year 2016. The main function of the SRO is to be the liaison between the school and the police department and to also bridge the gap between the students and law enforcement. Patrolman Omar Kendall is currently the department's SRO. SRO Kendall is assigned to all schools in the district.
The SRO is also in the school to ensure the safety and security of all students, staff, and employees in each school. The SRO has received extensive training in school-related emergencies, lockdown and evacuation drills, active shooter and receives continued training with juvenile and school security-related issues.
The SRO spends many hours in the classrooms speaking with students in relation to reading across America, stranger danger, the dangers of social media, drivers education, drugs and opiates, and topics related to today's student concerns. The SRO also works with counselors, students, and their parents in relation to referrals and services needed outside of school. The SRO will also provide a secure school climate and be a positive role model.
